Reading at Home

At Shirley Warren Primary School, we encourage children to develop a love of reading through exposing them to a variety of texts and genres. We are proud to work together with our parents to support the children in developing their reading skills at home as well as in school. Home is the perfect place to be able to select books of their choice and explore books outside of their classroom environment. As teachers and parents, it is our responsibility to read with children daily. This is vital in ensuring progress and competence in reading. Reading is an essential life skill that enables the children to access all other areas of their learning. It is imperative that school and home work together to secure these reading skills.

Early Years and Key Stage One
If your child is still on the Phonics journey, they will be provided with a full-decodable book matching the sounds they have already secured. If your child is in Year Two and no longer on the Phonics journey, they will receive a book suited to their ability. These books should be read daily at home and progress should be recorded in their reading log. Reading books and logs should be handed in weekly (day depending on individual class timetables) so that our teachers can support this progress at home.

Key Stage Two
Depending on their ability, a book will be allocated to them every week. These books should be read daily at home and progress should be recorded in their reading log. Reading books and logs should be handed in weekly (day depending on individual class timetables) so that our teachers can support this progress at home.

Purple Token Reading Challenge

To encourage children to read at home, we have a whole school competition! The children can earn purple tokens for reading at home and purple tokens = prizes!

They just need to follow these steps:

  1. Read
  2. Write it in your planner
  3. 3x reads = show your teacher
  4. Teacher gives you a purple token
  5. Collect purple tokens in the classroom
  6. During Monday assembly pour your purple tokens into your year group container
  7. The year group with the most purple tokens at the end of the term wins a prize

The adults are taking part too! Remember:
