A WOW Start to Year 3!
Wow! What a start to Year 3 we have had! The children have come back to school full of energy, enthusiasm and commitment to learn as much as they can. They have settled really well into the routines of Year 3 and have risen to the challenge of being in Key Stage 2.
We have started the year by exploring characters, specifically the farmers in Roald Dahl’s Fantastic Mr Fox. Through considering their thoughts, actions and how others react to them, we have concluded that they are very unpleasant people! Using this, we have worked hard on all the skills needed to describe our own ghastly farmer, including challenging ourselves to use some impressive vocabulary. We will be producing class books of these character descriptions and the children will be bringing a copy home to show off to you. Our next writing challenge, which begins next week, uses The Twits by Roald Dahl as a stimulus to write our own narrative.
Maths has begun as investigations into place value and how our number system uses hundreds, tens and ones to show the value of different digits. We have used practical resources to consolidate our understanding and explore how adding 1, 10 and 100 changes a number.
The children have particularly enjoyed the beginning of our Science topic about our body, by making their own skeleton using cotton wool buds. They showed great resilience in cutting the buds, which proved more challenging than we thought it would be! Hopefully most skeletons arrived home without too many missing bones! The children have been fascinated by the differences in the skeleton of different animals and we hope to continue this as we find out more about the human body.
What a great start, Year 3! We are proud of the way you have tackled everything and we are looking forward to what comes next!
